The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce® (NGLCC) descended on the heartland of America to introduce itself to businesses and organizations in Omaha, Neb.
On May 15, Justin Nelson, president and co-founder of the NGLCC, gave the keynote address at the Greater Omaha GLBT Professionals Second Annual Conference: "How are We Doing in the Workplace?"
At the conference, which focused on workplace and community issues facing LGBT individuals, attendees heard from Nelson, who spoke about the importance of being politically active as a member of the LGBT business community and talking to decision-makers about equality issues from a business perspective.
"You don't have to be partisan, but you do have to be political," Nelson said during his address.
During his speech, Nelson also touched on health care issues as they relate to small businesses, as well as the Small Business Administration's 7(a) and micro loans that the NGLCC was instrumental in discussing with the Obama administration.
Attendees had an opportunity to network before participating in informational sessions about legal trends in the workplace and supplier diversity, during which Nelson offered insight into how small businesses can become involved in supplier diversity initiatives. Nelson also served on the panel during a session that focused on advocacy issues for LGBT individuals in business.
The Greater Omaha GLBT Professionals group aims to advance growth and equality for its members, businesses and allies through education, networking and community-building activities.
