First WBI Teleconference: U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney Discusses her Book on Women's Progress

U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., will take your questions and discuss her new book, Rumors of Our Progress Have Been Greatly Exaggerated, in the year's first WBI teleconference call March 10.

The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce® (NGLCC) kicks off the 2010 Women's Business Initiative (WBI) teleconference series with an exclusive conversation with U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., on March 10.

In honor of Women's History Month, Maloney will discuss her new book, Rumors of Our Progress Have Been Greatly Exaggerated, on the conference call, and she'll talk about the steps women can take to make real progress on women's issues in their homes, communities and workplaces.

In her book, Maloney explores why women's lives don't appear to be easier today despite having made so much "progress" over the years, why women find balancing work and family to be more challenging than ever before, and why women workers still only make 77 cents for every dollar male workers make. She'll also focus on why members of Congress like herself still have to fight to preserve rights such as women's educational equality and reproductive freedom that seemed secure decades ago.

In writing the book, Maloney drew on her years in elective office and history of political leadership as well as numerous discussions with women from all walks of life. She offers actionable steps for women to make progress on critical concerns—a topic she'll discuss during the teleconference.

Maloney is a longtime supporter of the LGBT community. She was an original co-sponsor of the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009, and backed the inclusion of protections for transgender persons in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Additionally, Maloney authored legislation to expand the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to give couples in domestic partnerships, civil unions and same-sex marriages all of the benefits offered by the law.

Maloney was recently honored with the 2010 NGLCC House Congressional Leadership award for her support of LGBT legislation and for authoring the Credit Card Holders' Bill of Rights.

The March 10 teleconference is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. EST. Please RSVP for the teleconference at wbi@nglcc.org. Upon receipt of your RSVP, you will be sent call-in information for the day of the teleconference.

If there is a specific question you would like Rep. Maloney to answer during the call, you can submit questions ahead of time to wbi@nglcc.org.
