NGLCC Thanks Representative Barney Frank for Exceptional Record as LGBT Equality Champion

11/29/2011
Washington, D.C. (11/29/11) – The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) thanks Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) for his long record of achievement as an outspoken champion of LGBT equality, a pioneer of gay visibility, and an advocate for the prosperity of small businesses nationwide.

“Congressman Frank is an outstanding hero who made history when he became the first openly gay member of Congress in 1987,” said Justin Nelson, NGLCC President and Co-Founder. “The world has come a long way since then, due largely to the courage and conviction leaders like him who kicked down doors for future generations to pass through. His intelligence, dedication, and of course his sharp wit, will surely be missed on Capitol Hill. ”

Frank has represented the fourth congressional district of Massachusetts since his election in 1980. In 1987, Frank come out as a gay man and has been one of the most influential LGBT politicians in the U.S. ever since. Frank has been an outspoken proponent of LGBT equality on the issues of federal domestic partner benefits, marriage rights, the right to serve openly in the U.S. military, employment non-discrimination, and LGBT inclusive hate crimes legislation.

"Though our staff and membership was sad to hear of his retirement, we commend him for his three decades of service to the LGBT community and to our country," said Chance Mitchell, NGLCC CEO and Co-Founder. "We hope that Frank will stay an important part of the gay rights movement and still bring his influence to bear to local, state, and federal issues where LGBT equality is still questioned."
