The Issue:
Climate change concerns, coupled with cripplingly high prices for oil are driving increasing renewable energy legislation, incentives and commercialization. According to the United Nations, investment capital flowing into renewable energy climbed from $80 billion in 2005 to a record $100 billion in 2006.
Green firms contribute about $900 billion to the American economy annually and employ more than 11 million workers. In 2006 these small businesses hired eight million new workers, and that number is expected to reach 40 million - or 25 percent of the workforce - by the year 2030. Most of the jobs created are expected to be in small business industries such as farming and contracting.
NGLCC and the Issue:
In 2008, the NGLCC urged the 110th Congress not to let the Renewable Energy Tax Credits Expire. In addition, the NGLCC supports President Obama's commitment of $25 billion to renewable tax credits and incentives in the fiscal stimulus package, and encourages the 111th Congress to approve renewable energy legislation.
