The large-scale national demonstrations for the LGBT community began with the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights on October 14, 1979. Although there is no record of how many people demonstrated on that day, it's estimated 200,000 people attended.

Wisconsin became the first state to pass a law preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation on February 25th, 1982. Although other states like Massachusetts would follow suit nearly a decade later, the state of Wisconsin was the first of today's total of 20 states that have passed laws to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

NGLCC family, Today our thoughts are with our local affiliate chambers, LGBTBEs, corporate partners, and friends whose communities have been ravaged by the ongoing wildfires across northern California. In addition to the 24 reported deaths and countless missing person reports, many in Sonoma, Napa, and Solano counties have lost their homes, businesses, and livelihoods. The communities impacted by the wildfires have faced tremendous loss, and we hope for the continued safety of those still in the area.
