NGLCC Saddened by Loss of Washington Blade; Other Windows Media Publications

(Washington, DC) November 17, 2009 -- Today the co-founders of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) had the following to say about the loss of the Washington Blade and other Windows Media publications:

"From Washington, DC to Atlanta - from Florida to Texas and New York City, the closing of Windows Media, LLC and the many LGBT-focused newspapers under its umbrella has sent shock waves through the LGBT community. Simply put, it is a sad day. For decades LGBT people have counted on these publications to share needed information about LGBT people and our families and to tell the stories often left out by the mainstream media.

We are particularly saddened by the demise of the Washington Blade, our hometown paper. From the first days 40 years ago as a one page, one sided publication that let people know there was a community in the nation's Capital and they were organizing, to groundbreaking coverage of the AIDS epidemic of the 80's, the Matthew Shepard murder in the 90s and the continuing fight for equality in America and the city of Washington today, the Washington Blade helped serve as our conscience. You will be missed, but not forgotten."
