August 19, 2010 - Washington, DC - Over the last month, several major players in the telecommunications industry have brokered compromises with one another in the hopes of providing the best service possible to American consumers, without heavy handed regulation from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
On August 9, 2010, Verizon Communications and Google announced that they had reached an agreement on a legislative framework proposal for Congress as it prepares to tackle legislation on regulating the Internet. The proposal offers a common-sense alternative to the FCC's intent to reclassify the Internet that would impose a serious regulatory burden on Internet service providers. This is on the heels of AT&T accepting an olive branch from Amazon regarding that company's suggested "win-win-win" to end net neutrality battles.
"We applaud these leaders in the telecommunications industry, particularly Verizon and AT&T for working with other industry leaders to reach agreements and compromises that will ensure open Internet, and at the same time foster investment, innovation and healthy competition," said NGLCC co-founders Justin Nelson and Chance Mitchell. "It is particularly important to our business community that all Americans have unimpeded access to the tools made available by the Internet, and we look forward to Congress enacting legislation that will allow for sensible regulation of the Internet by the FCC that will encourage the continued deployment and adoption of broadband our communities need to participate successfully in a global economy."
