The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with several organizational partners, including the National Center for Transgender Equality, is currently gathering information to create a resource toolkit for transgender business owners and entrepreneurs that will aid in the process of transitioning while running a company and serve as a resource for transgender business owners. This resource will cover issues that include:
- Coming out to employees, clients, colleagues and business partners
- Considerations when debating for and against coming out as a transgender business owner
- Ways to connect to the LGBT business community
- How to develop business through certification as an LGBT Business Enterprise
Based on anecdotal evidence, interviews, and exploratory research, the toolkit will provide both theoretical and real-world examples of how transgender business owners have navigated their transitions while running their companies. The toolkit will also have a pull-out information guide designed to serve as a conversation starter with employees, clients, peers, and others on behalf of the transgender business owner.
The NGLCC is currently identifying individuals to participate in one-on-one interviews, online surveys, and/or focus groups to supplement research in this field. If you are a transgender individual who currently owns or has owned a business and would like to share your experiences, we would love to speak with you. We also appreciate any referrals of contacts within your network that may be inclined toward participating. Additionally, referrals to any employees, clients, business partners, and/or other stakeholders in your business network that would be interested in sharing their perspective are appreciated.
